Paserene Union 2015

At one with nature.

Paserene is the own label of Martin Smith, one time consultant at Vilafonté. Existing wines include a Chardonnay and a red blend called Marathon featuring Carmenère and Petit Verdot, these now joined  by another red blend from the 2015 vintage called Union.

From 50% Syrah, 37% Carignan and 13% Mourvèdre grown in Tulbagh, the wine was matured for 16 months in old oak. On the nose, some pink rose fragrance before red fruit, vanilla and spice. The palate shows pure fruit, fresh acidity and soft tannins. Although there’s nothing discordant about it, it does feel a little closed down right now and perhaps will be a more interesting drop in 12 months’ time. Price: R350 a bottle.

Editor’s rating: 89/100.
