Paul Clüver Estate Pinot Noir 2021

By , 26 August 2022

While you won’t find many bottlings of local Pinot Noir over 10 000 bottles and many much smaller than that, the Estate 2021 from Paul Clüver in Elgin amounts to some 22 000 and very charming it is, too.

Incorporating clones 667, 113,115 and 777 from vineyards planted between 1990 and 2018, fermentation occurred spontaneously before maturation lasting 12 months in French oak, 20% new.

The nose is still very primary with notes of rose and musk before cranberry, strawberry plus a little white pepper while the palate shows great fruit purity, snappy acidity and powdery tannins. With a modest alcohol of 13.04%, its got a lovely transparency about it. Price: R280 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 91/100.
