Elgin is not exactly famed for its wines from the red varieties of Bordeaux but the Malbec as made by the Wallace family from three blocks on their property called Wallovale typically manages to offer both the dark fruit character that the variety is famed for with the district’s trademark vivacity to good effect.

The 2020 (price: R260 a bottle) was matured for 15 months, 70% in barrel, of which 20% was first-fill, and 30% in concrete egg. Cassis, violets and herbs on the nose while the palate has good structure – pure fruit matched by lively acidity. Not too weighty or sweet, the extraction and oaking has been well handled. Alcohol: 13.99%.

CE’s rating: 91/100.
