Pella Family Reserve 2013

By , 15 July 2021

At R1 500 a bottle, the current-release Pella Family Reserve 2013 as made by Daniël de Waal of Super Single Vineyards is not cheap but production was a mere 372 bottles and the wine is intended to “represent the very best the cellar has to offer”.

Predominantly from Cabernet Sauvignon but also including Malbec, the wine was matured for 18 months in French oak, 100% new. The nose is complex with top notes of violet and herbs before red and black berries, earth, spice, pencil shavings, undergrowth and oystershell. The palate is medium bodied and shows admirable restraint – deep but not weighty, possessing plenty of freshness, the tannins fine. Harmonious and still remarkably youthful, it promises much drinking pleasure in years to come.

CE’s rating: 94/100.
