Mesmerizing. That’s ultimately the best way to describe Voorloper Bush Vines Syrah 2018 from Daniël de Waal of Pella Wines/Super Single Vineyards. Grapes from a 1985 Stellenbosch vineyard on granite, winemaking involved 50% whole-bunch fermentation before 18 months in third-fill oak. The nose shows blackberries, pepper, a hint of lavender, and charcuterie while the palate has a great presence – a wonderful core of fruit, lemon-like acidity and firm but fine tannins, the finish long and savoury. Seamless and delicious. Price: R350 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 98/100.

I have for many years maintained Daniël de Waal and his Super Single Vineyards with the Pella/Mount Sutherland ranges are undeservedly under the radar. I hope Christian’s rating will generate not only interest in this Syrah, but all his wines. Daniël has maintained a classic style since the first wine of his I remember tasting in the late 1990s. He’s a thoughtful person, always interesting to chat to. Ingrid, his wife makes fantastic soap from natural ingredients. Well worth a visit to their tasting room.
