Super Single Vineyards new releases

Canettevallei in Stellenbosch Kloof is a family-owned lavender and boutique wine farm, Daniël de Waal incumbent here since 2004. Super Single Vineyards is the umbrella brand, Pella referring to the coastal range of wines, grapes mostly from own vineyards.

Pella Thomas se Dolland Pinotage 2023
Price: R205

From a vineyard planted in 1960. Matured for 14 months in second- and third-fill oak. Plum, cherry and a hint of oak spice on the nose. Medium bodied with fresh acidity and a nicely dry finish. Well balanced and rather elegant. Alc: 13.5%.

Matured for 15 months in barrel, approximately 15% new. Heady aromatics of black cherry and plum. Full bodied – plush fruit, fresh acidity, tannins providing drying grip to the finish. Alc: 14%

Pella Die Hang Sangiovese Grosso 2022

Matured for 12 months in third-fill barrels. Black cherry, cassis and dried herbs on the nose. Lean with lemon-like acidity, the finish long and dry. Alc: 14%.

Voorloper Bush Vines Syrah 2022

From a vineyard planted in 1985 on granite. Approximately 30% whole-bunch fermentation. Matured for 18 months in older oak. Black berries, lavender and pepper on the nose. The palate combines depth with composure – a dense core of fruit matched by fresh acidity, the tannins lending a firm structural frame. Layered and long. Alc: 13.5%.

Pella Verlatenkloof Merlot 2022

From a vineyard planted in 1990. Matured for 12 months in barrel, 20% new. Complex aromatics of plum, black cherry and cassis plus hints of chocolate, Xmas cake and tilled earth. Rich and full with moderate acidity and velvety tannins. Impressively ripe yet retaining freshness and avoiding any sense of sweetness. Alc: 14%.

The King and I 2021

50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 50% Merlot. Matured for 18 months in barrel, 35% new. The nose shows red and black berries, a hint of dried herbs, vanilla, spice and pencil shavings. Medium bodied with fresh acidity and fine-grained tannins. Good fruit expression, the finish long and dry. Elegant and refined. Alc: 14%.
