Of South Africa’s approximately 5,400 hectares of certified heritage vineyards (35 years or older), just 81 hectares are planted to Palomino. Piekenierskloof Wines has now released the maiden 2025 vintage from a vineyard planted in 1974. Total production is a mere 713 bottles; price: R440.

The wine was fermented in concrete tank and matured for six months in older 300-litre barrels. The nose shows blossom, fynbos, lemon and green apple, while the palate is concentrated yet vibrant, combining a creamy texture with fresh acidity before finishing long and dry. Alc: 12.36%.

CE’s rating: 93 | Delicious

Wow – we only have 91 hectares of Palomino in total in SA (probably less at this exact moment, because it’s being uprooted at a rate of knots), so just about 90% of all the Palomino is made up out of heritage vineyards. The wine sounds delicious, by the way. Let’s keep these old vines in the ground, folks!
