Pieter “Bubbles” Ferreira, chief operating officer at Cap Classique house Graham Beck, makes the stuff but it his wife Ann who officially owns the Pieter Ferreira label, and it’s quickly established itself as one of the finest bubbly ranges available. Tasting notes and ratings for the new releases as follows:
Pieter Ferreira Extra Brut 2017
Price: R330
70% Chardonnay from Robertson and Napier, 30% Pinot Noir from Stellenbosch. Winemaking involved a small portion undergoing barrel maturation, while time on lees was 60 months. Flinty reduction before citrus, red apple plus subtle yeasty, nutty notes. The palate is lean with brilliant acidity and a fine mousse, the finish super-dry. Very tight and focused.
CE’s rating: 93/100.
Pieter Ferreira Blanc de Blancs 2016
Price: R465
100% Chardonnay. W.O. Robertson. Again, a small portion underwent barrel maturation, time on lees being 72 months. Peach, citrus, biscuit, a hint of liquorice and spice on the nose, while the palate is opulent and full of flavour, the mousse lending a creamy texture, the finish savoury. This release is particularly rich and round.
CE’s rating: 91/100.

Doesn’t what’s termed one of South Africa’s finest bubblies, “some of the best bubbly around”, warrant a score of 95, if not 96 or 97 perhaps?

Hi Mike, While I think SA Syrah, for instance, is now world-class, I would suggest that Cap Classique is still a little behind special cuvée Champagne.
