Wine obsessive Chris Groenewald has long made his own wines under the umbrella title of Pounding Grape. He bought into the boutique Terracura label in 2022, and will continue to collaborate on this project through 2026, but will increasingly be charting his own path. Tasting notes for his newly released wines as follows:
Bringing Back The Joy Skin Contact Sauvignon Blanc 2024
Price: R195
Grapes from Durbanville. Seven days on skins. Matured for 10 months in concrete egg. Nectarine, orange, fynbos and white pepper on the nose while the palate is concentrated and fresh, the finish savoury in flavour and providing a lightly grippy sensation. Hardly mainstream but not too esoteric, either. Alc: 12.08%.
CE’s rating: 93/100.
Heart Candy Pinotage 2024
Price: R195
NEW. From Durbanville grapes. Matured for 13 months in two old 228-litre barrels. Candy-floss, plum, cherry, flowers and a touch of earth on the nose. The palate is sappy, clean and vital – pure fruit and fresh acidity, the finish lightly dry. A New Wave style, instantly likeable. Alc: 13.03%.
CE’s rating: 91/100.

After reading some articles about Chris Groenewald i managed to make contact with him during the harvest and agreed to meet once the harvest was done. Agreeing to meet at Parow’s only 5 star restaurant, Bar-B-Que, Chris would provide the wine whilst i would take care of the bill. Both of us finding this a win/win arrangement. At first i was very nervous being a novice and Chris a SA wine taster but he soon put me at ease with his friendly demeanor and genuine love of anything to do with wine. He presented his flight of wines in Gabriel glasses brought along by a mutual friend. We started with his Sauvignon Blanc aptly called “Bringing back the Joy” which i scored 94. This was followed by his “Fairies in the Garden” Semillon Gris – not having exposure to this variety i found the pinkish colour and taste much to my liking. Thereafter we tasted one of my favourites, a Swartland Chenin Blanc which i scored 95. We then proceeded to taste his Pinotage and my other favourite namely his Cabernet Franc “Where the lines Bend” the grapes was sourced from Kaapzicht and it is breathtaking. The wine was actually bottled the previous day and obviously need time some time in the bottle to settle down. I purchased some of his Cab Francs for later drinking. Thereafter the ribs was presented and the friendly batter started whilst the wine was flowing. He then took us on a tour of his winery which, according to Google Maps, is 1,5 kilometer’s from the restaurant. The next morning he was on his way to meet up with Greg Sherwood in London with 30 bottles in his luggage. I wish Chris all the best with his future endeavors and believe he has the talent to produce great wines.
By the way, i now know why Kwispedoor is so knowledgeable.
