Riebeek Cellar Wine Co was established in 1941 and is today owned by 30 shareholders, with some 900ha of vineyard under cultivation. Sheree Nothnagel, previously of Wildehurst, moved across at the end of 2019 to head up the boutique cellar, and Raar is the name for a series of small batch wines.

The Shiraz Carbonic Maceration 2022 over-delivers at R150 a bottle. The nose shows red and black berries, fennel, fynbos, earth and white pepper on the nose while the palate is juicy and pliant rather than rich and full – alcohol is 14.39% but the wine is full of flavour and doesn’t lack freshness. Very more-ish indeed.

CE’s rating: 91/100.

Hi Christian. The label states that the wine is ‘Certified sustainable’, do you know what this means? I had a bottle of Raar grenache noir recently and it is also very pleasant.

Hi Thomas, The following from Raar winemaker Sheree Nothnagel: “Certified sustainable refers to our IPW certification. Seeing as we are IPW certified we have the special “Integrity and Sustainability” Wine and Spirit Board seals on the bottles.”
