Raised by Wolves is the name for two special project wines from Yardstick, the venture that sees winemaker Adam Mason collaborating with chef Peter Tempelhoff and investor Charles Banks.
There’s a Muscat de Frontignan 2015 as well as a Semillon Gris 2015, production amounting to just 300 magnums each.
Both wines are available from Chapmans Peak Wine & Spirits and we opted for the Semillon Gris (R340 a bottle) as 1.5 litres of Muscat seemed a bit of a tall order for a party of six.
Grapes for the Semillon Gris, which come from a Franschhoek vineyard planted in 1936, were whole bunch fermented in a concrete tank before maturation in a 500-litre barrel.
Slightly darker than an Aperol spritz in colour, the nose shows notes of red apple, cherry, flowers, spice and earthiness. The palate has layers of flavour, bright acidity and a pithy finish. A wine with bags of personality.
#WinemagRating: 92/100.
