Reyneke Reserve Red 2020

By , 10 May 2024

The 2020 vintage of the Reserve Red from Polkadraai Hills property Reyneke seems particularly understated. Grapes from a southerly facing vineyard on slightly shallower granite soils, winemaking involved 30% whole-bunch and foot-crushed before spontaneous fermentation in open-top concrete containers before maturation lasting 18 months in old oak.

Aromatics of red berries, musk, fynbos and white pepper precede a palate that is light and fresh, the tannins very fine and the finish nicely dry. It’s elegant (alc: 13.42%) but already quite mellow. Price: R790 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 92/100.
