Rijk’s Barrel Fermented Chenin Blanc 2018

By , 17 January 2022

Rijk’s Private Cellar in Tulbagh attracted much acclaim when it launched in the early 2000s but now seems happier to adopt a much lower profile in the marketplace. That said, the current release 2018 Barrel Fermented Chenin Blanc is impressive.

Winemaking involved 30% spontaneous fermentation before maturation lasting 11 months in French and Hungarian 300-litre oak barrels, 40% new. The nose shows some flinty reduction before lemon, peach, a hint of vanilla and wet wool while the palate is rich and full but not short of drive thanks to punchy acidity. Good volume,  lots of flavour, the finish pleasingly savoury. Price: R185 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 94/100.
