Sadie Family Wines Signature Series new releases

By , 21 July 2022

Made from multiple varieties sourced from vineyards across the Swartland, Palladius and Columella from Sadie Family Wines are both intended to be a “canvas” of the district. Tasting notes and ratings for the new releases as follows:

Palladius 2020
A blend of 11 varieties from 17 vineyards – Chenin Blanc, Grenache Blanc, Clairette Blanche, Viognier, Verdelho, Roussanne, Marsanne, Semillon Blanc and Gris, Palomino and Colombard. The nose is inevitably somewhat inscrutable but in the most basic terms there are notes of citrus, stone fruit, hay and spice plus a leesy character. The palate is full-bodied, rich and round. Intense in both flavour and body but also possessing punchy acidity, this has massive presence.

CE’s rating: 95/100.

Columella 2020
A blend of six varieties from 10 vineyards – 40% Syrah, the rest Mourvèdre, Grenache, Carignan, Cinsault and Tinta Barocca. Complex and exhilarating aromatics of lavender, fynbos, red and black berries, olive, liquorice, earth and spice while the palate shows impressive depth of fruit, bright acidity and firm but fine tannins. The structure is simply awesome, this being a wine with plenty of grunt but equally nothing clumsy about it. Very, very striking.

CE’s rating: 97/100.
