Has the whole Saga Vineyards concept – an umbrella brand for Montagu whites, a Polkadraai Hills Syrah, and an often-overlooked Barbera – become fully established? Who cares, if it lets the precociously-talented Reenen Borman (mostly of Boschkloof) do inspired work.

Patatsfontein Wit Versnit 2025

55% Colombard, 45% Chenin Blanc. Matured for 11 months in concrete and foudre. Expressive aromatics of flowers, peach and citrus. The palate shows pure fruit and vibrant acidity, finishing savoury. Good texture and weight – substantial and balanced, without undue austerity. Alc: 12.5%.

CE’s rating: 94 | Serious

Patatsfontein Steen 2025
Price: R450
Gorgeous aromatics of flowers, herbs, spice and citrus. Dense fruit, tightly wound, with well-integrated acidity and a pithy finish. Succulent on entry, then quickly piquant and pithy. Pure, focused, lip-smacking. Alc: 12.5%.

CE’s rating: 97 | Distinctive

Sons of Sugarland Syrah 2025
Price: R450
100% whole-bunch fermentation, matured entirely in concrete. Pretty aromatics of rose, red berries, dried herbs, olive brine and white pepper. The palate is pure and vital with powdery tannins and good fruit definition. Fuller and more charming, this is seamless and refined, a less wild vintage. Alc: 13.4%.

CE’s rating: 96 | Serious
