Saltare Old Vines Chenin Blanc 2020

By , 13 March 2024

Carla Pauw of Saltare concentrates on making Cap Classique but has also long made an Old Vine Chenin Blanc, her 2020 worth seeking out.

Grapes from a Paardeberg vineyard planted in 1971, it was spontaneously fermented and matured for nine months in older oak. The nose shows hay, peach, naartjie, cut apple, ginger and some yeasty complexity while the palate has dense fruit, punchy acidity and a savoury finish. It’s perhaps a little raw and unrefined but entirely compelling as a result. Price: R260 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 94/100.
