Shannon Vineyards Semillon 2016

Nifty footwork.

James Downes of Shannon Vineyards in Elgin says that he and the winemaking team which is Gordon and Nadia Newton Johnson of Newton Johnson Vineyards are looking for less oak influence on his Semillon – only 30% new oak and larger formats used on the 2016, the wine matured for slightly longer than previous vintage.

It’s paid off, the wine showing even more detail and delicacy than its predecessors. On the nose, notes of thatch and blossom before lime, naartjie and white peach. The palate meanwhile is rich and creamy with nicely coated acidity. Very skillfully done. Wine Cellar price: R215 a bottle.

Editor’s rating: 93/100.
