Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel Brut 2012 vs 2013
By Christian Eedes, 21 December 2017
Mèthode Cap Classique showed extremely well at this year’s Veritas with no less than seven wines winning double gold (see here), two of these going to Simonsig, the Cuvée Royale Blanc de Blancs 2012 and the Woolworths Pinot Noir Rosé 2015 being the wines in question.
In something of a tour de force, this Stellenbosch also took gold medals for its Kaapse Vonkel Brut 2012 and 2013, which were recently tasted side by side. Tasting notes and ratings as follows (it’s not clear if the wines are available for purchase – the 2015 vintage is available online at R135 a bottle:
Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel Brut 2012
50% Pinot Noir, 46% Chardonnay, 4% Pinot Meunier. White peach, citrus and some classic brioche character on the nose. The palate has lovely depth of flavour and a creamy mousse – great balance and length.
Editor’s rating: 90/100.
Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel Brut 2013
63% Pinot Noir, 37% Chardonnay. Honey, white peach, a hint of wild strawberry and some hard-to-describe savoury chatacter. Rich with a soft mousse and a savoury finish.
Editor’s rating: 88/100.
