Simonsig Tiara 2018

By , 2 August 2022

The Cape Bordeaux Red Blend that is Tiara 2018 from Simonsig in Stellenbosch is 82% Cabernet Sauvignon with the rest of the blend consisting of 13% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot and 1% Malbec, alcohol registering at 14.6% and maturation lasting 18 months in French oak, 80% new.

It’s an unusually statuesque wine for a vintage that’s tended to yield earlier drinking if not outright insipid wines. Red and black berries, a hint of fresh herbs plus pencil shavings, vanilla and spice on the nose while the palate is full bodied with fresh acidity and nicely grippy tannins. Price per bottle is R255 – you can pay more and do worse.

CE’s rating: 92/100.
