Simonsig Steen 2017

Milestone wine.

The first wines under a Simonsig label appeared in 1968 and as part of this year’s 50th anniversary celebrations, the Stellenbosch property has released a special-edition Steen 2017. Grapes come from a 1987 vineyard and involved four pickings while maturation lasted 12 months in old oak, the wine bottled in magnum.

The nose shows an intriguing herbal note before pear, apple and peach and just a hint of oak-derived vanilla. The palate is lean and tightly wound – pure fruit and fresh acidity before a finish which is suitably long and dry. It’s a subtle and poised wine providing a stylistic counterpoint to the property’s accomplished but typically powerful Chenin Avec Chêne. Price: TBC.

Editor’s rating: 93/100.
