Sons of Sugarland Syrah 2022

By , 24 March 2023

Winemaker Reenen Borman says that with Sons of Sugarland he’s trying to reflect “the honest side of Syrah” and therefore wants the wine to be as “raw” as possible – grapes from Polkadraai Hills, vinfication involves 100% whole-bunch fermentation before maturation lasting 11 months in a concrete “diamond”.

Gorgeous aromatics of violets, lavender, fynbos, black berries and pepper precede a palate that is vivid and energetic – pure fruit, zippy acidity and powdery tannins combine to joyful. Alcohol is 13.4% and it’s just wonderfully well realised, once again. Price: R415 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 97/100.
