Whereas Oude Nektar Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the highest block on the Jonkershoek Valley property that supplies Stark-Condé at 500m above sea level, the Cab for Three Pines comes from the oldest block, planted some 30 years ago.

Also including 7% Petit Verdot and 3% Malbec, the 2019 combines ripeness of fruit with verve. The nose is exotic and heady with notes of cassis, violets, some leafiness, earth and oak spice while the palate shows great depth of fruit, bright acidity and very fine tannins, the texture smooth in the best sense. Pure, focused and well balanced, this is expertly crafted.  Matured for 20 months in 300-litre barrels, 50% new. Alc: 14%. Price: R590 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 95/100.
