The Canvas Collection is the new name for a trio of wines from Constantia property Steenberg, so called to evoke a painter’s canvas and the skill required to create something of beauty – an idea as elegant as it is, perhaps, inevitable.
Blanc 2024
Price: R270
86% Sauvignon Blanc, 14% Semillon. Matured for nine months in barrel, 20% new. Soft citrus, peach, blackcurrant, dried herbs and white pepper on the nose. The palate displays dense fruit, creamy texture, big acidity before a finish that’s long and dry. Alc: 14%.

Semillon 2024
Price: R320
From a block planted in 2007. Maturation as above. Soft citrus, peach, yellow apple, hay and white pepper. The palate is broad and smooth textured with moderate acidity and a gently savoury finish – well balanced. Alc: 14.74%.

Price: R360
Matured for 24 months in 500- and 600-litre barrels, 30% new. Red and black cherry, tomato leaf, cured meat, spice and a touch of earthiness Medium bodied but not underdone (alcohol is 14.5%) with fresh acidity and fine yet grippy tannins. Alc: 14.5%.

I have grown really fond of Nebbiolo from my time living in Europe. I’m interested to know how does the Steenberg version compare to say a Langhe Nebb from Piedmonte?

Hi Gareth, An aside to myself when tasting it was more “light red” (the 14.5% alcohol notwithstanding) than classic Barolo or Barbaresco. To be fair to winemaker Elunda Basson, she’s not claiming that it’s a world-beater. Still, it’s worth a punt if you’re open to going down a path less travelled…
