Steenkamp new releases

Piet Steenkamp is the fourth generation of his family to farm Bottelary property Groenland,150ha currently under vine, the likes of Distell, KWV and Leeuwenkuil being customers for both grapes and bulk wine. There’s also a range of own-label wines, the top-of-the-range Steenkamp Cape Bordeaux red blend now joined by an old-vine Chenin Blanc. Tasting notes and ratings as follows:

Steenkamp Ou Bosstok Steen 2022
Price: R320
Grapes from a 1.9ha vineyard planted in 1981. A compilation from two 500-litre barrels, one new and the other second-fill, total production 1 000 bottles. Made by Danie Steytler of Kaapzicht. Honeysuckle, hay, yellow peach, vanilla and spice on the nose. The palate is rich and broad with moderate acidity and a creamy texture. Flavourful but rather old-school in aesthetic, the oak to the fore. Alc: 13.5%.

Steenkamp Red 2017
Price: R320
50:50 blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Matured for 12 months in barrel, 100% new.  Red and black berries, dried flowers, herbs, earth and undergrowth on the nose while the palate has good depth and length – concentrated fruit, bright acidity and grippy tannins. Archetypal Stellenbosch red.
