The Steilpad Chenin Blanc 2023, Jorrie du Plessis’s second release under his own label, is also the final vintage made from Lammershoek grapes, as he departed the Swartland property that May to join AA Badenhorst.

From two blocks, the one planted in 1968 and the other in 1973, it was matured for 13 months in old 500-litre barrels. Aromatically, it’s very expressive with notes of honeysuckle, fynbos, citrus, peach and apricot plus a little leesy complexity. The palate has good fruit purity, snappy acidity and finish that’s dry and enduring. It combines structure with tension and the intensity of flavour is remarkable. Alc: 13%.

CE’s rating: 94/100.
