Stellenrust Chenin Blanc 2015
By Christian Eedes, 4 February 2016
I’ve written before about what great value the Stellenrust Chenin Blanc offers and the 2015 is no exception. Vineyards vary in age but none are younger than 30 years and some up to 42 years. Fermentation occurs spontaneously, 88% in tank and 12% in old oak, and maturation lasts five months.
It’s immensely fun to drink. On the nose, citrus, peach and apricot plus a hint of leesy complexity. The palate meanwhile has plenty of sweet, sun-kissed fruit offset by bright acidity and a slight bitterness lending interest on the finish.
It costs R44.99 a bottle from Pick n Pay and the question is: once Stellenrust have accounted for production, packaging, marketing, transport, duties and retailer’s margin, how do they make any money?
#WinemagRating: 87/100.
