Stellenrust Chenin Blanc 2016
By Christian Eedes, 23 November 2016
Stellenrust in Stellenbosch does amazing things with Chenin Blanc, the standard label 2016 right up there with its more expensive cuvees. From vineyards none younger than 30 years and some over 40, the majority of the wine is tank fermented although a small portion sees older oak.
The nose is wonderfully expressive with notes of jasmine, citrus, peach, pineapple and some leesy complexity. The palate meanwhile is just about pitch perfect – fantastic fruit concentration offset by tangy acidity. The driest bottling to date, says winemaker Tertius Boshoff with a RS of 3.3 g/l, a pH of 3.15 and “sick” acdity of 7.2g/l. Price: R50 a bottle.
