Solid like a rock.
A chance visit to Stellenrust in Stellenbosch today provided the opportunity to taste the Douwe Steyn 2009, another extraordinary example of Cabernet Sauvignon from this district.
Grapes come from bush vines planted in 1942 and the wine was matured for 24 months in French oak, 100% new.
It’s wonderfully detailed with notes of red fruit, violets, the merest hint of mint, earth and spice. Great composure on the palate – intensely flavoured but not at all weighty, bright acidity and very fine tannins. A long, long finish and entirely delicious overall.
It’s named after the builder of the Castle of Good Hope and founder of Stellenrust in 1692. Total production was 900 bottles and it’s only available from the tasting room at R500 a bottle.
