The stand-out wine among an array of new-release “speciality wines” from Stellenbosch property Stellenzicht is The Vine Post Pinotage 2014 (price: R190 a bottle). From a individually staked vineyard planted in 2008 some 400m above sea level, the wine was matured for 29 months in 100% new oak, 60% East European and 40% French.
On the nose, red and black cherry, flowers, incense and spice. The palate shows pure fruit, bright acidity and firm but fine tannins. Well delineated, it doesn’t have any of the rusticity that so often characterizes wines from this variety.
