Stony Brook Ghost Gum Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

By , 31 May 2024

Does Stellenbosch have a strangle-hold on SA’s best Cab? I’ve always thought that Ghost Gum from Franschhoek property Stony Brook is worth consideration, the newly released 2021 looking particularly smart. Tasting notes and ratings as follows:

Initially fermented in stainless steel before being transferred to barrel, maturation lasting 26 months in barrel, 80% new. Dried red currant, a hint of cassis, violets and pencil shavings on the nose. The palate is full-bodied with fresh acidity – good fruit definition, linen-like tannins and a nicely austere finish. Substantial without losing charm. Alc: 14.74% – carries this very well.

CE’s rating: 93/100.
