Storm new releases

Hannes Storm describes 2023 with some understatement as a “challenging vintage”. 90mm of rain fell on Valentine’s Day in the general Hemel-en-Aarde area and major precipitation had to be negotiated for the rest of the season.

Ridge Chardonnay 2023

W.O. Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge. Matured for 11 months, 80% in French oak (of which 24% was new) and 20% in clay amphorae. The nose shows blossom, citrus, a touch of pineapple, herbs and nuts. The palate is not without weight but hardly chunky – lovely fruit purity, bright acidity and a creamy texture. Packed with flavour, the finish gently savoury. Alc: 13.35%.

Vrede Chardonnay 2023

W.O. Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. Matured for 11 months in French oak, 35% new. A little smoky reduction before peach, lemon and orange plus hints of vanilla and spice. Rich and round on the palate – generous fruit, well integrated acidity and a gently savoury finish. Seamless and lush. Alc: 12.95%.
