Sutherland Vineyards new releases

After establishing Stellenbosch property Thelema Mountain Vineyards in the 1980s, the Webb family purchased an Elgin property in 2002, and Sutherland Vineyards was born. Tasting notes and ratings for some of the new releases as follows:

Sutherland Pinot Noir 2021
Price: R250
Matured for 10 months in barrel, 15% new. Notes of cranberry, red cherry and rose plus some smoky reduction while the palate is light and bright with a peppery finish. Alc: 13%.

CE’s rating: 91/100.

Sutherland Syrah 2021
Price: R200
10% whole-bunch fermentation. Matured for 18 months in barrel, 30% new. The nose shows red and black berries, fynbos, earth and pepper. The palate is luscious – good weight of fruit and smooth in texture, the finish savoury. Alc: 14%.

CE’s rating: 90/100.

Sutherland Cabernet Sauvignon 2021
Price: R200
Grapes from vineyards on warmer, NNE facing slopes. Matured for 18 months in barrel, 35% new. Cassis, some leafy character, earth and spice on the nose while the palate is lean and fresh, the finish very savoury. A particular wine with a nice coolness about it. Alc: 14%.
