Swanepoel Old Vine Chenin Blanc 2024

By , 9 March 2026

For last year’s iTOO Next Generation Awards, then 29-year-old Dirk Swanepoel entered his White Pinotage 2023 which rated a respectable 90. He makes wine at the family property Oude Compagnies Post in Tulbagh mostly from own fruit but also an Old Vine Chenin Blanc from Citrusdal Mountain (R275 a bottle).

Matured for eight months in barrel, the 2024 vintage shows pear, peach and citrus, a little floral perfume and a hint of wet wool. The palate is light-bodied, pure and precise. Tightly wound, it has crisp acidity and nicely dry finish. Alcohol is a modest 12.5% and it over-delivers on refreshment.

CE’s rating: 92/100.
