Swartland Limited Release Roussanne 2015

And now for something completely different.

The marketing department at Swartland Winery might be over-reaching itself – the new wines from unusual varieties are pitched as “iconic” – but there’s nothing wrong with what’s actually in the bottle, at least when it comes to the Limited Release Roussanne 2015 which was sent for review (there is also a Mourvèdre and a Viognier).

From bush vines ranging in age between 15 to 25 years old on granite soils, fermentation in tank began spontaneously before inoculation at 18⁰ Balling, the wine spending six weeks on the lees.

There’s a hint of reduction before citrus, pear and white peach as well as dried herbs on the nose. The palate is pure and focused – good depth of flavour, no shortage of freshness, the finish long and intensely savoury. Only 6 000 bottles made. Price: R55 a bottle.
