The Tamboerskloof John Spicer Syrah 2009 is the single-vineyard, ultra-premium offering from Stellenbosch property Klienood. Made by Gunter Schultz, it was matured for 20 months in 300-litre French oak barrels, 75% new and 25% second-fill. The name recognises the son of owners Gerard and Libby de Villiers’s and total production was just 1 704 bottles, each labelled by hand and wrapped in a print of a painting created on the farm by acclaimed South African artist Beezy Bailey, price per bottle R510.
Is it any good? Pitch black in colour, it has a brooding nose and is massive on the palate. Super-intense with notes of black pepper and spice. It’s weighty and powerful but doesn’t tip over into caricature – it’s sculpted rather than polished. There’s a mulled wine quality in the best sense and I thought it was really impressive.
