By Christian Eedes, 19 September 2022
The 38th Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild (CWG) Auction is set to be held on Friday 30 September and Saturday 1 October 2022 at the Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West. This year’s auction will see a total of 43 wines from 30 guild members on offer – I tasted 39 of these wines sighted, tasting notes and ratings to be released over the course of this week.
Cap Classique
91
Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel Decade Pinot Meunier 2011
W.O. Stellenbosch. 100% Pinot Meunier. Aged on the lees for more than a decade. Cherry, red apple and lots of yeasty complexity on the nose while the palate shows good depth of fruit, pleasantly tart acidity and a creamy mousse. Rich, round and intensely flavoured but perhaps lacking some nuance.
White
90
Warwick The White Lady Auction Chardonnay 2020
W.O. Stellenbosch. Mature for nine months in 228-litre French oak barrels, one-third new. Vanilla, citrus and smoky reduction on the nose while the palate is rich and broad with well integrated acidity and a creamy texture. By the book.
Red
91
Raats Family Wines Stella Nova Cabernet Franc 2018
Grapes from the Polkadraai Hills, Stellenbosch. Matured for 18 months in 225-litre barrels. Red and black berries plus subtle notes of rose, herbs, vanilla and pencil shavings. The palate is medium-bodied, unfussy and nicely composed – pure fruit, fresh acidity and fine-grained tannins.
91
Saronsberg Inner Circle 2019
W.O. Tulbagh. 75% Shiraz, 15% Mourvèdre, 5% Grenache, 3% Viognier and 2% Roussanne. Matured for 20 months in French oak, 100% new. Heady aromatics of red and black berries, herbs and spice, pronounced vanilla plus hints of peach and floral perfume. The palate is luscious, round and smooth with a slightly hot finish.
90
Edgebaston Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2017
95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. Matured for 24 months in French oak, 100% new. Cassis, rum ‘n raisin, molasses, vanilla and some toasty character. The palate is huge and liqueur-like in its concentration – dense fruit, smooth tannins, the finish a little puckering. A very particular style.
90
Hartenberg CWG Amphora Merlot 2020
W.O. Stellenbosch. Matured for 18 months in a 400-litre Italian clay amphora. Ripe dark fruit on the nose while the palate is luscious and smooth textured – juicy fruit, bright acidity and soft tannins, some earthiness to the finish.
89
De Trafford Perspective 2020
W.O. Stellenbosch. 50% Cabernet Franc, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot. Matured for 18 months in French oak, 100% new. Dark berries, potpourri, tea leaf and oak spice on the nose. The palate is full and plush – lacks fruit definition and appears a little sweet with a hot finish (alcohol is 15.15%).
