The Blacksmith These Old Bones 2018

By , 23 June 2020

Still hanging together.

Spurred by colleague Tim James’s enthusiasm for These Old Bones 2018 as made by Tremayne Smith under his own The Blacksmith label (day job: Fable Mountain Wines), I sought out a bottle and what good drinking it proved to be.

Grapes are from a 1977 Voor Paardeberg vineyard that is officially registered as Chenin Blanc but has been found to be interspersed with multiple other varieties – for more about this fascinating site, see James’s original post here.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the wine doesn’t shout any particular aroma or flavour. On the nose, there are hints of citrus, peach and apple plus a little earthiness while the palate has lovely depth of fruit, gently acidity and a savoury, slightly bitter finish. It’s a really delicious, compelling bottle of wine. Approximate retail price: R255.

CE’s rating: 94/100.
