Tremayne Smith, assistant winemaker at Mullineux & Leeu, also makes wine under his own label called The Blacksmith. Tasting notes and scores for current releases as follows:
The Blacksmith Vin Blanc 2014
Wine Cellar price: R120
From Swartland Chenin Blanc, this wine underwent spontaneous fermentation and has an abv of just 11.5%. A hint of reduction before citrus and peach, dried herbs and a subtle leesy character. Light bodied and delicate – good fruit expression, the acidity not nearly as aggressive as you might expect and a pleasantly pithy finish. Only 520 bottles made.
Score: 88/100.
The Blacksmith Vin Noir 2014
Wine Cellar price: R150
A blend of 59% Cinsaut from Paarl and 41% Carignan from the Swartland. Red and black fruit, herbs, spice and a subtle earthiness – good fruit concentration, fresh acidity and tannins which are soft in the best sense. Typical of the district but but not too esoteric. Tassies for grown-ups. Only 600 bottles made.
Score: 91/100.
