The Fledge & Co. Jikken Bareru new releases

By , 11 April 2020

Jikken Bareru (Japenese for “Experimental Barrels”) is a range of wines from Boplaas winemaker Margaux Nel and Leon Coetzee of The Fledge and Co. intended for everyday drinking. Tasting notes and ratings for two new releases as follows:

Chirpy.

Nel & Coetzee Bosstok Steen 2019
Price: R85
Grapes sourced from two Swartland and one Stellenbosch vineyards. The nose shows top notes of blossom and hay before citrus, peach and a little guava plus a hint of reduction. The palate is lithe and flavour-packed – lovely fruit definition and perky acidity, the finish nicely pithy. Terrific quality relative to price.

CE’s rating: 92/100.

Sauvignon Blanc 2019
Price: R95
Grapes sourced variously from Stellenbosch, Elgin and Agulhas. Includes 5% Semillon. Some reduction before lime and green apple with some blossom in the background. Pure fruit and fresh acidity on the palate – good focus and balance, this is nicely understated and makes for very pleasant drinking.

CE’s rating: 89/100.
