The Fledge & Co. O-Velaphi? Chardonnay 2017

By , 24 April 2020

African dream.

This is the maiden vintage of a Chardonnay from Boplaas winemaker Margaux Nel and Leon Coetzee of The Fledge and Co, grapes from an Elgin vineyard planted to clone CY95, maturation in old oak lasting nine months.

The name “O-Velaphi?” is a conversational isiXhosa phrase to ascertain from whence one comes and the label features a photograph called “Space and Time” – a Kokerboom with Milkyway – taken by Cornelius Muller.

The nose shows citrus, white peach, oatmeal and a little leesy character while the palate has good fruit concentration, bright acidity and a savoury finish. None too austere despite an alcohol of just 12.68%. Price: R220 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 91/100.
