Thelema Merlot Reserve 2022

By , 22 April 2025

“We’ve been looking to dial back the Merlot Reserve – less extraction and more aeration to make the wine more refined,” says Thomas Webb, director of Stellenbosch property Thelema, and the newly released 2022 vintage does indeed have a winning plushness about it.

Matured for 18 months in 225-litre barrels, of which 55% was new, the nose shows cherry, plum and cassis, a hint of leafiness, a touch of rose, and subtle oak spice. The palate is not too light or green-edged – plenty of pure fruit, bright acidity and beautifully managed tannins (alc: 14%). It’s a seamless wine with quiet but persistent drive and provides all the pleasure that this variety is supposed to deliver but rarely does under local conditions. Price: R575 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 93/100.
