Thistle & Weed Brandnetel Chenin Blanc 2018
By Christian Eedes, 4 July 2019
So much to like about the Thistle & Weed from viticulturist Etienne Terblanche and winemaker Stephanie Wiid from what’s in the bottle to the enchanting packaging. Tasting notes and ratings for two new releases as follows:
Thistle & Weed Brandnetel Chenin Blanc 2018
Price: R290
From a 0.3ha Stellenbosch vineyard planted in 1980 with 32 different rootstocks for trial purposes. The nose is initially shy but opens up to reveal citrus, white peach, quince plus dried herbs and some leesy complexity. The palate is light bodied yet still possessing layers of flavour – pure, zesty, pithy. Plenty of refreshment value. Alcohol: 12.5%.
Editor’s rating: 92/100.
Thistle & Weed Knapsekêrel Cabernet Franc 2017
Price: R330
This label acquired from De Kleine Wijn Koöp, the team continuing to work with the same seven rows of biodynamic vineyard in Polkadraai. 20% whole-bunch fermented before 18 months in barrel. Notes of red fruit, fresh herbs (thyme in particular) and rose geranium. Light bodied with bright acidity and fine tannins (alcohol: 13.5%). Easily likeable but perhaps a little underdone for the price.
Editor’s rating: 89/100.
