Thistle & Weed, the collaboration between winemaker Stephanie Wiid and viticulturist Etienne Terblanche, has added Cap Classique to its portfolio with Vinkel Brut 2024, “vinkel” being Afrikaans for fennel, neatly aligned with the botanical naming that runs through the range.
Sourced from Chenin Blanc on the Simonsberg and matured on the lees for 12 months, the wine is unapologetically primary on the nose: florals, herbs, ocean spray, citrus and a hint of peach. The palate is light and incisive, with a fine, energetic mousse and a satisfyingly dry finish (alc: 12.5%). Its appeal lies less in complexity than in precision – clean, refreshing and very easy to like. Price: R245 a bottle.
