Tierhoek Grenache 2011

Tiger juice.

From 60-year-old vines grown 760m above sea level in Piekenierskloof, the Tierhoek Grenache 2011 is wonderfully appealing (and pretty good value at R110 a bottle). Red and blue fruit rather than black, some fynbos, subtle spice. It’s medium bodied with fresh acidity and soft tannins. It’s tighter than previous vintages but definitely not severe – a perfect mid-week wine.

Score: 88/100.

If I’m not mistaken, both Jan Boland Coetzee and Neil Ellis use grapes from this (or nearby) vineyards. Would love to see the three wines compared in a blind taste-off.
