Tierhoek Straw Wine NV

By , 14 April 2025

Straw wine is rarely an exercise in restraint, and the rendition from Tierhoek in Piekenierskloof is no exception – it takes no prisoners. Grapes were air-dried for two weeks before fermentation and six months’ maturation in barrel.

The nose is intensely expressive, offering a heady mix of orange peel, dried peach and apricot, raisin, rooibos, and a hint of floral perfume. The palate is super-rich, viscous and very, very sweet although there’s a good line of acidity that stops it from becoming entirely too cloying, the finish gently savoury. Alc: 11%.

CE’s rating: 93/100.
