Tokara Limited Release Pinotage 2016
By Christian Eedes, 26 October 2018
The Limited Release Pinotage 2016 from Stellenbosch property is, as ever, big and booming but it kind of works. From a single block, grapes were picked at 25 degrees Brix. Fermentation was spontaneous and maturation lasted 22 months in French oak, 50% new.
There’s a floral top note to the nose before cherries, plums, earth and spice. The palate is plush and super-concentrated (alcohol: 14.5%) with a certain saltiness to the finish preventing it from becoming over-whelming. Price: R315 a bottle.
Editor’s rating: 90/100.
