Vergelegen Shiraz 2017

Is Vergelegen underperforming? 20 years ago, it was one of the properties which defined the debate and set quality standards. Now it just seems to tick over, its wines generally reliable rather than category leaders (the premium white blend being the obvious exception).

Low risk.

The standard-label Shiraz 2017 is safe and nothing more. Destemmed and inoculated, maturation lasted 15 months in older oak. The nose is true to variety but not particularly intense showing red and black fruit plus subtle notes of pepper and smoked meat. The palate is medium bodied and fresh enough, the tannins relatively soft. It’s sells for R150 a bottle and frankly there are other mid-tier options from Kadette by Kanonkop to Kloof Street Rouge by the Mullineuxs that would serve you better.
