Vino pH current releases
By Christian Eedes, 25 October 2024
Vino pH has a new home, namely Wolfkloof, the Piket-Bo-Berg property recently acquired by winemaking couple Hanneke and Thinus Krüger. The label was originally begun by Hanneke (formerly at Badenhorst Family Wines) along with Frenchwoman Pauline Roux in 2019 but is now run by Hanneke alone – Roux is partner of Paul Jordaan, who together own Paulus Wine Co. Tasting notes and ratings for the current releases as follows:
Palomino 2023
Price: R190
Grapes from a Piekenierskloof vineyard planted in 1974. Four days of skin contact. Matured for 11 months in old oak, including a sherry vat. The nose shows soft citrus plus a trace of potpourri and some nuttiness. The palate is light which is not to say dilute with fresh acidity and a salty finish. Alc: 11.5%.
CE’s rating: 90/100.
Barbera 2024
Price: R330
Grapes from the Paardeberg. Made using carbonic maceration. Red and black berries, lavender, earth and spice on the nose. Good fruit depth, bright acidity and though the tannins are soft, the finish is still dry. Most appealing.
CE’s rating: 90/100.
Pinot Noir 2022
Price: R330
Grapes from Ceres Plateau. 10% whole-bunch fermentation. Red and black berries, earth and spice with just a little rose in the background. The palate has nice weight, bright acidity and tannins that are soft and powdery. Undemanding but likeable enough. Alc: 14%.
CE’s rating: 89/100.
Cabernet Sauvignon 2022
Price: R270
Grapes from Swartland. Matured for 16 months in old oak. Includes 5% Shiraz from the 2023 vintage. Predominantly black rather than red berries, violets, fynbos and a touch of mint on the nose. The palate is rich, round and broad – lots of juicy fruit and fresh acidity, the finish nicely dry. True to the district in how substantial it is. Alc: 14%.
CE’s rating: 92/100.
