Vondeling Babiana 2019

By , 3 February 2021

Cape White Blends make for an extraordinarily strong category, Babiana from Voor Paardeberg property Vondeling a consistently good example ever since Callie Louw, now of Porseleinberg, made the maiden vintage 2005. Matthew Copeland, incumbent winemaker since 2007, has pretty much made it his own and the 2019 is stand-out.

Consisting of 56% Chenin Blanc, 19% Viognier, 16% Grenache Blanc and 9% Roussanne, the nose is wonderfully complex with intriguing leesy, waxy notes before apple, naartjie and stone fruit plus hints of hay, dried herbs and spice. The palate is full bodied and fleshy, the weight and texture lend it a lovely pillowy. The acidity, meanwhile, is well integrated and the finish long and gently savoury. Price: R230 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 94/100.
