Vuurberg current releases
By Christian Eedes, 22 January 2024
Vuurberg wines are made by the celebrated Donovan Rall on behalf of Dutchman Sebastiaan Klaassen, who owns a property in Banghoek. The wines typically don’t reach the market that early and I’m not sure it’s doing them any favours. Tasting notes and ratings for the current releases as follows:
Vuurberg White 2021
Price: R220
Chenin Blanc, Viognier, Roussanne, Verdelho and Semillon. Matured in older oak for 10 months. The nose shows peach, hay, nuts, bee’s wax and thatch. The palate is broad (despite an alcohol of just 12.5%) with layers of flavour, well-integrated acidity and a gently savoury finish. Drinking well now but should probably just about make 2026.
CE’s rating: 91/100.
Vuurberg Red 2018
Price: 14.5%
Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Cinsault. Matured for 24 months in older oak. Ripe berries and plums plus a malty note on the nose while the palate is rich and broad with some heat to the finish – alcohol is 14.5%. Drink up.
CE’s rating: 87/100.
